For the last time, I’m bringing you some answers from Macie! What surprised Macie, when she first came to the Czech Republic?

- What is the first thing you’re gonna do when you get back home?
- Eat Mexican food and pet my dog.
- Are there any traditions that you’d like to have in America?
- Some of the Czech Christmas traditions are fun. When my family came to visit over the holidays, my sister, cousin, and I did the shoe throwing tradition that determines whether or not a woman will get married in the next year. We had a good time participating in the tradition, so maybe we will continue it in America.
- Is there anything you expected about our country before coming that turned out to be completely different?
- Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect; however, before coming here, I was told that Czech people don’t smile as much as Americans (especially big smiles with your teeth). Honestly, I do think people here smile less with their teeth but I don’t think Czech people smile less than Americans.
- What do you think of the pace of life here compared to the U.S.? Is it faster and more stressful or the opposite?
- I think that in the US there is more pressure to be productive all the time. Here, it appears to me that people care a lot about spending time in nature and engaging in skills and hobbies that make them happy.
- If you could bring one thing from the U.S. here, what would it be?
- My sister – she always makes me laugh.
- And lastly, what message would you like to give to students afraid to speak English?
- Learning English is tough, but there are many reasons why it can be useful to speak it, especially if you like to travel. Everyone has their own comfort level when it comes to learning languages, but try to step out of that comfort zone once in a while because the more you practice (even just casual conversations), the easier you’ll find speaking English to be. And I guarantee someone will understand your English better than you’d understand my Czech, so you’ve got this!
I’m so glad I had the chance to get to know Macie better and to share that with you. I want to wish her all the best in the future and to enjoy these last months before returning to USA. - Co uděláš jako první, až se vrátíš domů?
- Dám si nějaké mexické jídlo a pomazlím se se psem.
- Objevila jsi nějaké tradice, které bys ocenila i v Americe?
- Některé vánoční tradice jsou zábavné. Když na svátky přijela má rodina, má sestra, sestřenice a já jsme zkoušely tu, kdy házíte botou, která určí, zda se příští rok vdáte. Užily jsme si to, takže možná s touto tradicí budeme pokračovat v Americe.
- Co jsi od Česka očekávala, ale ukázalo se, že to tak není?
- Upřímně, nevěděla jsem co očekávat; nicméně, než jsem sem přijela, bylo mi řečeno, že Češi se neusmívají tolik jako Američané (hlavně ne velké úsměvy se zuby). Ale nemyslím si, že se lidé zde smějí méně než Američané, jen ne od ucha k uchu.
- Je život tady víc uspěchaný a stresující než v Americe, nebo spíš naopak?
- Přijde mi, že v Americe se klade větší důraz na to, být neustále produktivní. Tady lidé hodně času věnují procházkám a koníčkům, které je dělají šťastnými.
- Kdyby sis mohla vzít jednu věc z Ameriky sem, co by to bylo?
- Moje sestra – vždy mě umí rozesmát.
- A nakonec, jakou radu bys dala studentům, kteří se bojí mluvit anglicky?
- Učit se anglicky je těžké, ale je tu spoustu důvodů, proč je užitečné se umět domluvit, zvlášť pokud rádi cestujete. Všichni máme jinou hranici komfortu při učení se jazyku, ale snažte se jí čas od času překračovat, protože čím víc budete trénovat, tím jednodušší se pro vás stane mluvit anglicky. A já vás ujišťuji, že někdo vám bude lépe rozumět anglicky než mně česky, takže se nebojte!
