In September, our school welcomed a native English speaker, Macie Thomas.
She came all the way from the USA, and I figured it would be a great idea to find out a bit more about her than we can catch during our classes! And this is just the first part – so buckle up!
(V září naše škola přivítala rodilou mluvčí angličtiny Macie Thomas. Přijela k nám až z USA, a tak jsem usoudila, že by bylo skvělé se dozvědět informace, ke kterým se v hodinách nedostaneme! - Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
- I am 22 years old and from the state of Nebraska, which is in the middle of the United States of America. There are four other people in my family: my dad, mom, sister (who is nineteen years old), and brother (who is sixteen years old). I also have a goldendoodle named Charlie. I enjoy playing sports, reading books, and going on adventures in natural landscapes.
- Is this your first experience of this kind?
- This is my first time teaching English and living abroad for longer than a month. I taught English in Costa Rica last summer, but it was only for a short time.
- When did you get the thought of trying something like this?
- Back home, I enjoyed working with an organization that helped people learn English as a second language, so I searched for opportunities to continue this kind of work.
- What brought you to our country? Why did you choose the Czech Republic?
- I am here because of the Fulbright program, which allows people to teach English in a different country for 10 months. I chose the Czech Republic because I grew up 20 minutes away from the small town of Wilber, which is declared the official Czech Capital of the United States. Every summer, Wilber organizes a 3-day festival called Czech Days, where they celebrate the town’s heritage with traditional Czech dances, parades, food, and cultural demonstrations. The energy and excitement of the festival sparked my interest in the Czech Republic as a whole, and after learning more about the country in my university classes, I chose the Czech Republic when applying for the Fulbright program.
- What were your first impressions here at our school?
- I was shocked to learn that students and teachers change their shoes after coming into school! That is something I never experienced when going to school in the US. Also, I came from a larger school district in Nebraska where there was a separate building for the high school-aged students (14-18 years old) and the younger students, so it was interesting to experience a school that had students from 11-18 altogether.
- What do you think about the level of English among our students?
- I am so impressed by the level of English among the students here! No matter what their level or motivation for learning English is, I can tell that the students here are hardworking and very talented in language learning.

(Nakonec bych chtěla Macie poděkovat, že si udělala čas a odpověděla na mé otázky, a popřát jí co nejlepší zážitky s námi, studenty, v následujících měsících.)
- Mohla bys nám o sobě říct pár slov?
- Je mi 22 let a pocházím ze státu Nebraska, který je ve středu Spojených států amerických. Jsme pětičlenná rodina: můj táta, máma, sestra (které je 19 let) a můj bratr (kterému je 16 let). Také vlastníme goldendoodla jménem Charlie. Ráda sportuji, čtu knihy a podnikám výlety do přírody.
- Je toto tvá první zkušenost tohoto druhu?
- Poprvé učím angličtinu a zároveň žiji v zahraničí déle než měsíc. Minulé léto jsem učila angličtinu v Kostarice, ale jen krátkou dobu.
- Kdy jsi poprvé pomyslela na možnost zkusit něco takového?
- Doma mě bavilo pracovat pro organizaci, která pomáhala lidem učit se angličtinu jako druhý jazyk, tak jsem začala hledat možnosti, jak v této práci pokračovat.
- Proč sis vybrala právě Českou republiku?
- Jsem tady díky Fulbrightovu programu, který umožňuje lidem učit angličtinu v cizí zemi 10 měsíců. Vybrala jsem si Českou republiku, protože jsem vyrůstala 20 minut od městečka Wilber, které je označováno za oficiální české hlavní město USA. Každé léto se zde organizuje třídenní festival zvaný Czech Days, kde se oslaví české dědictví města pomocí tradičních českých tanců, průvodů, vystoupení a jídla. Ta energie a nadšení tohoto festivalu mě zaujaly, a když jsem se o Česku naučila víc na mé univerzitě, vybrala jsem si ho, už když jsem se do programu Fulbright hlásila.
- Jaké byly tvé první dojmy z naší školy?
- Šokovalo mě, že se studenti a učitelé přezouvají! To je něco, co jsem na škole v USA nikdy nezažila. Na mé škole se taktéž studenti rozdělovali na mladší a starší do oddělených budov, takže bylo zajímavé zažít školu, kde se spolu potkávají studenti od 11 do 18 let.
- Co si myslíš o úrovni angličtiny našich studentů?
- Jsem velice překvapená! Nezáleží na tom, jak dobří nebo motivovaní jsou, ale vidím, že jsou pracovití a mají na jazyky talent.
